respect
character
- you must earn my respect
- the degree of respect I owe you is determined by our respective
positions in the hierarchy of power
health
- two kinds of respect
- the respect we are all due
- the respect that is earned
- when some people in power (parents, bosses) demand respect they may, in
fact, be demanding obedience
- when you respect others you value their
- privacy/boundaries
- autonomy/independence
- right to be allowed their dignity
- human rights
- needs
- wants
- when you respect others you accept
- what they say about themselves (because it is true for them)
- their feelings
- you don't tell them what to feel
- you don't demand that they not feel, or show feelings
- when you respect others you don't give them unsolicited advice
- if you respect yourself you will respect others
- you don't have to force people to respect you
- happy people naturally respect others, out of empathy
- unhappy people who don't respect you should be avoided
- if they don't respond to your demands that they respect you
