Notes
When Benedict Arnold's December 1775 attempt to capture Quebec failed, George Washington approved the plan of Col.Jacob Bayley of Newbury,VT to build a road across Vermont to St. Jean Quebec. The road which started at Wells River, was to be
used to bring reinforcements to the American Army which was continuing the siege of Quebec. It would be a shorter supply route than the trip from Fort No. 4 in Charlestown, N.H. to St.Jean via Crown Point and Lake Champlain. Col Bayley started
construction of the raod on May 10, 1775 .....Bayley and his men built the road across Cabot Plains to Peachman...in mid June 1775 construction ceased probably because Gen Washington sent a message to Bayley on June 25 "I would advise you to
consider well the Advantages and Disadvantages which will result from completing the work .. if the enemy will be affforded easy Pass to make Incursions into our Colonies.. it will be improper to carry it on." Boston Globe June 1, 1975.The
Bayley-Hazen Military Road Monument is on the east side of the road just below Caspian Lake, Gen Hazen having completed the road in1779.
