Notes
He was descended from a noted Bayley family, combined with some French Huegenot blood, that immigrated to America in the 1600's.. His sympathies in the war with England ( Revolutionary) was with the English as he was a surgeon in the British
army. Because of his character and learning he was warmly recieved by the new Republic after the war. Dr.Richard Bayley was not only a noted physician, but also professor of anatomy at King's Colege, an institution later to develop into
Columbia University. His first wife died when Elizabeth was 3 yrs old and he then married a Miss Barclay, from the family which gave the name to the Barclay Street in N.Y. One of their descendant blood relations was Franklin D. Roosevelt, who
when Gov. of New York State, wrote in 1931 "In my childood my father often told me of Mother Seton, for she was a very close connection to the Roosevelt family, and her sister-in-law, I believe, was my great-aunt. Her distinguished nephew,
Archibishop Bayley, was a cousin of my father James Roosevelt, and they were very close friends....." Source "Mother Seton by Leonard Feeney p.4 Revised Ed., Ravengate Press, Cambridge 1925"
