Notes

He lived in Bradford, Mass. The will of James Bailey was probated 2/27/1727 in Salem, Mass. Second marriage to the widow Mrs.Mary Bacon, 22 Nov., 1733. This second marriage is cited as an instance of the custom in New England of what were known as "smock" weddings. If a widow came to a marriage in clothes provided by her husband to be, he did not have to assume her debts. Frequently the bride was married in a sheet, hence the name smock.

"He then declared that he took the maid person without anything of Estate and Lydia, the wife of Elizaer Burbank and Mary, the wife of Thomas Stickney and Margaret the wife of Caleb Burbank, all of Bradford, were witnnesses that the Cloaths and then had on were of his providing and bestowing up on her. William Bales, minster of ye Gospel." Nov. 22, 1733.
