William Bradford, the governor for more than 30 years of Plymouth Colony, Plymouth, Mass. was born in March 1590 in Austerfield, Yorkshire, England the son of a yeoman farmer. He was self taught. He joined Puritan groups and was among the
125 Scrooby separatists who sought (1608) religious sanctuary in Holland. When the group decided(1617) to seek refuge in America, Bradford took major responsibility for arranging the details of emigration. They left Holland on July 22, 1620
for Southampton, England, where they joined other separatisits and sailed, on the Mayflower for America, after several delays, on16 Sept 1620. They put down anchor at Provincetown, Mass. on 21 Nov, 1620.
When the first governor of Plymouth Colony, John Carver, died suddenly in April, 1621, Bradford wsa unanimously elected to replace him and was reeleclted 30 times. He died May 9 or 19, 1657.
