1 NOTE  Ouida Francis was born on the family farm at Hopewell, Robeson County,  North Carolina (15 Sept.,1913) daughter of D. F.Lowry from whom she inherited her considerble energy and ability. She is the only daughter of four surviving past the age
2 CONT of 40 due to the ravages of cancer.
1 NOTE She graduated from  U. Chatanooga, Chatanooga, TN in 1938, with a B. S. in science  and received her M. S. from U. Iowa, Iowa City, IA in 1940 in Zoology. Abd did post graduate work at  Harvard and U. Penn. in subsequent years.
1 NOTE During World War II worked at the Frankford Arsenal, Phil., the Naval Air Station, Johnsville, PA. and conducted research at the U. of Penn, Philadelphia, PA. Taught biology at the U.of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, Iowa and  in public schools in
2 CONT MA and IL for 25 years.

1 NOTE The Rev.D.F.Lowry, the youngest son of Calvin, became a legend in his own time. A man of considerable energy and capabilities, he was  responsible for founding and building  some eight rural churches primarily for the Indians of Robeson County,
2 CONT N.C. He was an  educator and the first graduate from the Indian College in Pembroke, now the Pembroke State Universy of North Carolina, where he served on the board of directors (the student building has been named in his honor).He was the
2 CONT first pastor of the Pembroke Methodist Church, a rural mail carrier and farmer. He and his first, wife Jessie Mae Hatcher of South Carolina, had eight children. Jessie died in 1941 and D.F. married Phelia Hunt in 1942.

1 NOTE Samuel Orwell, called Ole  by his mother, was born in Baileyvillle,IL, 27 Dec. 1872. At the age of 5 he and his parents moved to a farm owned by his father in the state of Iowa. Later they lived at the family homestead in Grundy County, Iowa
2 CONT where Ole atended grade school,then high school at Grundy City, later attended Cornell College, Mt. Vernon, IA for three terms. Joined with his father and brother James Levi ( Lee) in managing the family farms and engaging in grain dealing and
2 CONT realestate. Later joined with his brother in operating the Bailey Brothers Hardware Store in Cedar Falls. Upon his fathers death in 1905 the hardware business was sold and he devoted his full time to managing the considerable estate, in the
2 CONT neighborhood of 4,00 acres of Iowa Land, left to the two boys by their father Ransom.  Due to over speculation in realestate, primarily farmland, were caught short in the land depression of the twenties and filed for bankruptcy. S.O. then
2 CONT engaged in insurance and realestate in Cedar Falls until his death in Nov 1944. Was active in local affairs in Cedar Falls - Ch.SchoolBoard, Masons, Pres. Fair Grounds, Meth.Church,

2 CONT Nebraska  novelist who gained national prominence in the 30's and 40's having been on the best selling list with her novels, 'A Lanter in her Hand', 'Miss Bishop' ( later made into a movie)and others.. A long period of correspondence between
2 CONT Bess and Grace took place during their lifetimes and Grace retained the letters from Bess, later passed down to Julie Bailey (Grace's daughter) who in turn gave them to the Historical Society of Nebraska. From these letters the recent (1995)

1 NOTE Ransom was born at Baileys Mills, Reading, Windsor County, Vermont. As a young man he was engaged in farming at $12./m and at the age of 24 having accumulated $600.00, he and his older brother Orwell and younger brother Samuel,Jr. left Vermont,
2 CONT in 1869, to settle in Olge County  Illinois. With his brothers he engaged in stock-farming and began a factory for making wire-tooth horse rakes. They acquired property from the National Government and founded the town of Baileyville, near
2 CONT Freeport. Ransom and his family moved to Grundy County in 1877 and located two miles east of the homestead farm which they then developed. His land holdings in Iowa exceeded 2,400 acres at one time in Grundy,Emmet,Tama, Worth, Butler, Dickinson
2 CONT and other counties of Iowa.
1 NOTE Ransom first married Amanda Krantz(on 7 Mar1866) b. Oct.7,1848  d. Jul.15,1866,  one year after their marriage ( presumably in child birth), he then married Mary Dyer, from E.Berne, Albany County, New York state, on 1January, 1867.
1 NOTE Ransom did not engage in public office but was generous in cmmunity and church projects. He retired to Cedar Falls in 1896 renting the700 acre home farm to the Fearer Brothers for $3.25/acre..John Fearer and his wife later moved to Cdar Falls

1 NOTE  Born  in East Berne, Albany County, N.Y. where her father Judge James Dyer  sat on the bench in Albany county for many years. She attended high school  in Albany and then the seminary in Mount Morrie, N.Y. Moved with her aunt and uncle, Mr.
2 CONT and Mrs. E. Strevell to Chicago in 1862 where she lived with her aunt until Mr. Strevell returned from the war, after which they moved to Olge County, Illinois. She married Ransom Bailey on 1 January 1867. In 1877 while visiting one of her
2 CONT husbands farms in Iowa the forman suddenly left the farm. She decided at that time to live on  the farm sending for her household goods and from then on made her home in Iowa. They moved to Cedar Falls, Iowa  in 1896. Taken from the obituary

1 NOTE Samuel died at the home of his son Ransom Bailey in Grundy Co., Iowa at the age of 97. Letters exchanged between Samuel (and other members of his family then residing at the Bailey's Mills home in Reading, Vermont) and his family, mainly his
2 CONT son Ransom in Grundy Co. Iowa, were preserved by Ransom and passd down to Samuel Orwell, son of Ransom and then to his son Ransom Bailey. Ransom's brother S. David Bailey in turn gave these letters to Wm. M. Bailey, a second  cousin, who has
2 CONT transcribed, cross referenced, typed and published them  as the letters of Samuel Bailey.
1 NOTE From these letters it appears that Samuel largely funded (possibly by loan only) the enterprises of his three sons who came to Illinois. This money was probably from the estate of Levi Bailey, Sameul's father.
1 NOTE Samuel came to Iowa and Dakota in 1886.

1 NOTE Levi moved from Massachusetts as a young man to Vermont in 1790. First settling in Hartland then purchasing property in Reading where he established a  milling operation consisting of grist mills, carding, black smith shop,  a community store
2 CONT and other activities utililzing the water power of the brook now known as Baileys brook.. He built Baileys Mill's a large two story building resembling a Greek revival mansion but primarlily for his many business activilties. It included two
2 CONT identical apartments as housing for the Bailey family and  his businesse managers.The building along with the local community became known as Baileys Mill's and is operated today (1996) as a Bed and Breakfast by its owner Barbara Thaeder with

1 NOTE  Samuel Bailey Jr., a small business man in Amherst, Mass.,  died at the Battle of Bunker Hill on June 17, 1775 along with about 140 other Patriots who responded to  the British troops landing in the Boston harbor to seek and destory munitions
2 CONT which the Minutemen had sashed in the outlying communities of Boston following the skirmishes at Lexington and Concord in April of that year. His name appears on a marker at the site of the Bunker Hill Battle. Some records report that a brother

2 CONT as "smock" weddings.  If a widow came to a marriage in clothes provided by her husband to be, he did not have to assume her debts. Frequently  the bride  was married in a sheet, hence the name smock.

1 NOTE James Bailey acquired by allotment and purchase considerable real estate. He was a citizen in good standing, holding office of Selectman and Overseer of the Poor. His house stood on Pleasant Streei, Rowley. The original grant reads: "To James

1 NOTE Cyrus did not apparently move to Iowa with his father George in 1875 as Winnifred, his oldest dqughter, was born in Pecatonica in 1876. If Albert's obituary is correct Cyrus was in Cedar Falls in 1879 but in 1881 he is up in Emmet Co, Iowa and
2 CONT then back to Cedar Falls in 1887 when Grant was born. According to Robert G.Simpson and Julie Bailey, Cyrus was an unsucessful (unlucky) farmer but a good carpenter/builder - not a good business man. After he retired he spent a great deal of
2 CONT time ( and money) trying to build a perpetual motion machine in the basement of his home at 9th and Clay Street, Cedar Falls. I remember as a college student examining this work of considerable skill, and the futile dream to achieve an 
2 CONT unlimited source of energy.  This consisted of beautifully hand carved series of rolling hard wood bars which rolled to the center of a six foot wide revolving wheel. As the machine was placed in motion  they rolled to the outer perimeter and

1 NOTE At 18 yrs. started working for a Mr.Jarvis, Weathersfield Bow, VT for 3 yrs, next to Talcott, Rockton, Ill. for 3 yrs, purchased a large tract of Government land in Ill. in 1847 which he and two of his younger brothers, Ransom and Samuel Jr.,
2 CONT divided in founding the town of Baileyville,Ill. The three sisters of the family came west and while one cared for the home the other two taught school and the three boys worked their farms. Orwell married "wealthy"* Maria Rogers, 16 Feb., 1855
2 CONT in Vermont. They had 5 children - Charles H(of Grundy Ctr), Frank D (of CF),Warren (died in Beaman, IA in 1897), George O. ( of Holland ,IA) and Eugene L.(of Grundy Ctr.). Orwell and Maria moved to a farm in Grundy County,IA in 1875, then to
2 CONT Holland, IA in 1888 where Maria died 6 June, 1898. Orwell then moved to Morrison,IA in 1903 where he died. Surviving were a sister, Mrs. Truman Patee of Morrison, two brothers, George of Vermont and Samuel Jr.of Wichita, KA, his four children,

1 NOTE Charles F. Bailey, probably the first Bailey of our family to attend college, was born in Reading, Vermont in 1857 and lived at home until 1873 when he entered the Green Mountains Perkins Academy, at S.Woodstock near their home at Beiley's
2 CONT Mills. After his graduation in December 1877, he entered the law offices of Gilbert A. Davis(author of the history of Reading, Vermont), at Felchville ( Reading), Vermont, where he read until June 1880. In August of 1880 he removed to the state
2 CONT of Iowa (where two uncles, Orwell and Ransom lived) and in the fall of that year  entered the Law Department of the State University of Iowa, graduating  in June 1881 with the degree of LL.B. and was immediately admitted to the the bar in the
2 CONT Stete of Iowa. He opened a law office in Grundy City and was elected Justice of Peasce in 1882 which he held for two years. In 1884 he formed a partnership with A.N. Wood, in 1886 was elected County Attorney for Grundy County which he held for
2 CONT two years.In the  fall of 1892 removed to Redlands,CA where he practiced law,  engaged in orange growing, and  bought and sold real estate.

1 NOTE Today (1937) some 30 % of the population of Robeson County , N.C. are full blooded or part Indian. The state first acknowledged their existence in 1885 (the laws of N.C. 1895 Chap 51) giving them thename Croatan Indians. In 1911 the Indians
2 CONT succsfully got the name changed to "Indians of Robeson County" (P.L of N.C. 1911 Chap 215) Later changed to Cherokee Indians of North Carolina (Laws of N.C. 1913 Chapter 123). In 1956 a geographical name was believed to be more appropiate and
2 CONT they became the Lumbee Indains, of North Caorlina,(from the Lumber River) the largest Tribe of Indians East of the Mississipii River. This was by Congressional act PL 570 84th Congress of US 1956.

1 NOTE Allen and his son William were killed by a "home guard" of 30 men at the end of the Civil War on a trumped-up charge of theft by a neighvor who wanted possession of the Lowry land. Their murder was witnessed by Henry Berry Lowry, the youngest
2 CONT son, at that time 17 years old, who vowed to avenge the murder of his father and brother by killing all 30 memebers of the home guard. According to family legend he did so with the help of two brothers, Steven and Thomas, and all three were
2 CONT declared outlaws with bountys on their heads. Steven and Thomas were later killed for their bounty.
1 NOTE Allen and William were first locked in the smoke house with women of the family and then taken to the field where they were forced to dig their own graves and then shot into them. All 30 of the Home Guard were instructed to shoot at one time so
2 CONT that no one could be accused of killing the Lowry men.

1 NOTE The connection of the Indians of Robeson County, N.C. ( later to be named Lumbee Indians from the Lumber River) to White's Lost Colony became evident in the 18th century when Europeans first began penetrating the vast swamps of Robeson County,
2 CONT 200 miles from the coast where they found a large grooup of blue eyed Indians speaking a very distinct Shakespearan English, the males wore beards, the presence of hens and chickens (no fowl were previoulsy fond in that area), and the clincher
2 CONT was the similarity of surnames with those of the Lumbee Indians and Gov. White's log. Such names as Dare, Cooper,Stevens, Sampson, Harvie, Howe, Cage. Chevert, Jones and Brooks. This migration to Robeson County, N.C. ws believed to occur around

1 NOTE Daughter of Henry Berry who was a grandson of Henry Berry a member of White's Lost Colony, North Carolina 1587. John White of England attempted to establish a colony on Roanoke Island, VA in 1587.  After three years Gov. White returned with
2 CONT supplies for the colony to find it gone, the only remains was a sign carved on a tree with the word Cro, and on a gate post the word Croatan, not the cross, the previously agreed distress sign. He therefore assumed the colonists had gone to
2 CONT live with Manteo, the leader of a friendly group of Hatteras Indians and whose birthplace he understood to be Croatan. A search of the area did not reveal any signs of the colonists so it became known as "White's Lost Colony ". Priscilla and
2 CONT John moved to a site near now Red Springs, N.C. in 1738 on part of the land grant which he acquired from his father. They had three sons and two girls.

1 NOTE Henry Berry Lowry was the most notoroious of the Lowry family outlaws and several books, plays, and historical records have been written describing his exploits.It began when, in post Civil War days, a neighbor Robert MacKensie (sp)
2 CONT perpetrated  charges against the Lowrys(for the purpose of acquiring their land)by accusing  the Lowry men of stealing food from his smokehouse and farm implements. He had these items planted on the Lowry property and then got the "home guard"
2 CONT to find them and implicate the Lowrys. According to his negro cook he later repented for his crime and became insane. There was considerable sympathy for the outlaws by the people of the community and on occasion Henry Berry would join the
2 CONT posse in search of himself. At one time an officer gave hm a uniform which he wore in searching for hmself with other troops.The legend also  claims that Henry Berry Lowry's mother persuaded him not to kill MacKensie. Henry Berry's rifle was
2 CONT given to the Lowry family by Gen. T. Sherman, of the Union Army, and is now in the possesion of Dr. Kermit Lowry, Jr. As related by D. F. Lowry.(ref.'ToDieGame'W.McK.Evans)

1 NOTE James came to America from England as a young man  as His Majestys 1st Judge of Virginia. He married a Tuscarora Indian a Tribe within the Iroquian family originally numbering about 5,000 in the state of North Carolina. In 1957 these and other
2 CONT Indian Tribes  of  Robeson County, North Carolina  joined together for the purpose of being recognized as an official Tribe of the North American Indians and thus eligible for increased funding from the Federa Government.  Now called the Lumbee
2 CONT Tribe, from the Lumber River which flows through that part of North Carolina, a name which they adopted in 1954  This recognition has yet to ne achieved. They now consistute the largest Indian Tribe East of the Mississippii river. .

1 NOTE Richard North was born in England and the family came to America in 1639. His first wife, name not known, died when their youngest child, Sarah, was quite young. He then married Ursala.
1 NOTE Among his children by his first wife was Susannah (North) Martin who was convicted of witchcraft and exceuted in Salem,  Mass on 19 May 1692 along with four other women. Susannah was born in England in1625, she married George Martin in Aug 1646
