Chatanooga, Chatanooga, TN in 1938, with a B. S. in science and received her M. S. from U. Iowa, Iowa City, IA in 1940 in Zoology. Abd did post graduate work at Harvard and U. Penn. in subsequent years. 1 NOTE During World War II worked at the Frankford Arsenal, Phil., the Naval Air Station, Johnsville, PA. and conducted research at the U. of Penn, Philadelphia, PA. A man of considerable energy and capabilities, he was responsible for founding and building some eight rural churches primarily for the Indians of Robeson County, 2 CONT N.C. He was an educator and the first graduate from the Indian College in Pembroke, now the Pembroke State Universy of North Carolina, where he served on the board of directors (the student building has been named in his honor).He was the 2 CONT first pastor of the Pembroke Methodist Church, a rural mail carrier and farmer. He and his first, wife Jessie Mae Hatcher of South Carolina, had eight children. At the age of 5 he and his parents moved to a farm owned by his father in the state of Iowa. Later they lived at the family homestead in Grundy County, Iowa 2 CONT where Ole atended grade school,then high school at Grundy City, later attended Cornell College, Mt. Vernon, IA for three terms. Joined with his father and brother James Levi ( Lee) in managing the family farms and engaging in grain dealing and 2 CONT realestate. Later joined with his brother in operating the Bailey Brothers Hardware Store in Cedar Falls. Upon his fathers death in 1905 the hardware business was sold and he devoted his full time to managing the considerable estate, in the 2 CONT neighborhood of 4,00 acres of Iowa Land, left to the two boys by their father Ransom. Due to over speculation in realestate, primarily farmland, were caught short in the land depression of the twenties and filed for bankruptcy. Grace ws a life long friend of Bess Streeter Aldrich, the 2 CONT Nebraska novelist who gained national prominence in the 30's and 40's having been on the best selling list with her novels, 'A Lanter in her Hand', 'Miss Bishop' ( later made into a movie)and others.. A long period of correspondence between 2 CONT Bess and Grace took place during their lifetimes and Grace retained the letters from Bess, later passed down to Julie Bailey (Grace's daughter) who in turn gave them to the Historical Society of Nebraska. From these letters the recent (1995) 2 CONT biography 'Bess Streeter Aldrich' by Carol Miles Petersen, U. Neb. As a young man he was engaged in farming at $12./m and at the age of 24 having accumulated $600.00, he and his older brother Orwell and younger brother Samuel,Jr. left Vermont, 2 CONT in 1869, to settle in Olge County Illinois. With his brothers he engaged in stock-farming and began a factory for making wire-tooth horse rakes. They acquired property from the National Government and founded the town of Baileyville, near 2 CONT Freeport. Ransom and his family moved to Grundy County in 1877 and located two miles east of the homestead farm which they then developed. His land holdings in Iowa exceeded 2,400 acres at one time in Grundy,Emmet,Tama, Worth, Butler, Dickinson 2 CONT and other counties of Iowa. 1 NOTE Ransom first married Amanda Krantz(on 7 Mar1866) b. Oct.7,1848 d. Jul.15,1866, one year after their marriage ( presumably in child birth), he then married Mary Dyer, from E.Berne, Albany County, New York state, on 1January, 1867. 1 NOTE Ransom did not engage in public office but was generous in cmmunity and church projects. She attended high school in Albany and then the seminary in Mount Morrie, N.Y. Moved with her aunt and uncle, Mr. 2 CONT and Mrs. E. Strevell to Chicago in 1862 where she lived with her aunt until Mr. Strevell returned from the war, after which they moved to Olge County, Illinois. She married Ransom Bailey on 1 January 1867. In 1877 while visiting one of her 2 CONT husbands farms in Iowa the forman suddenly left the farm. She decided at that time to live on the farm sending for her household goods and from then on made her home in Iowa. They moved to Cedar Falls, Iowa in 1896. Letters exchanged between Samuel (and other members of his family then residing at the Bailey's Mills home in Reading, Vermont) and his family, mainly his 2 CONT son Ransom in Grundy Co. Iowa, were preserved by Ransom and passd down to Samuel Orwell, son of Ransom and then to his son Ransom Bailey. Ransom's brother S. David Bailey in turn gave these letters to Wm. M. Bailey, a second cousin, who has 2 CONT transcribed, cross referenced, typed and published them as the letters of Samuel Bailey. 1 NOTE From these letters it appears that Samuel largely funded (possibly by loan only) the enterprises of his three sons who came to Illinois. He built Baileys Mill's a large two story building resembling a Greek revival mansion but primarlily for his many business activilties. His name appears on a marker at the site of the Bunker Hill Battle.
