Notes: James Bailey came to America in 1640. A brother, Richard, preceeded him coming on the good ship 'Brevis' from Southampton in 1638. Both settled in the town of Rowley, Mass. north of Boston. A nephew, John Bailey, also came to America about the same time.
James Bailey acquired by allotment and purchase considerable real estate. He was a citizen in good standing, holding office of Selectman and Overseer of the Poor. His house stood on Pleasant Streei, Rowley. The original grant reads: "To James Bailey house and lot containing an acre and a half lying on the north side of Edward Sawyer's house lot".
Richard came to America as servant of Richard Dummer (later to become Governor of Mass. and from whom the Prep School Gov. Dummer was named and where Lawrence David Bailey graduated in 1963) at the age of 15.
