Notes: Today (1937) some 30 % of the population of Robeson County , N.C. are full blooded or part Indian. The state first acknowledged their existence in 1885 (the laws of N.C. 1895 Chap 51) giving them thename Croatan Indians. In 1911 the Indians succsfully got the name changed to "Indians of Robeson County" (P.L of N.C. 1911 Chap 215) Later changed to Cherokee Indians of North Carolina (Laws of N.C. 1913 Chapter 123). In 1956 a geographical name was believed to be more appropiate and they became the Lumbee Indains, of North Caorlina,(from the Lumber River) the largest Tribe of Indians East of the Mississipii River. This was by Congressional act PL 570 84th Congress of US 1956.
