Grace attended the public schools in Cedar Falls and then graduated from the local college(in 1903) which was then the Iowa State Normal School(now U.of Northern Iowa). Her major was in English which she taught in the local school system until her marriage to Samuel O.Bailey in 1912. Grace ws a life long friend of Bess Streeter Aldrich, the Nebraska novelist who gained national prominence in the 30's and 40's having been on the best selling list with her novels, 'A Lanter in her Hand', 'Miss Bishop' ( later made into a movie)and others.. A long period of correspondence between Bess and Grace took place during their lifetimes and Grace retained the letters from Bess, later passed down to Julie Bailey (Grace's daughter) who in turn gave them to the Historical Society of Nebraska. From these letters the recent (1995) biography 'Bess Streeter Aldrich' by Carol Miles Petersen, U. Neb. Press, was a primary resource.
