Notes: A letter from Dr. Earl C. Lowry to his sister Ouida L. Bailey, dated 20 May, 1970 describes their grandmother "Frances Taylor, a red haired 19 year old, married Peter Hatcher in 1884. She lived all her life, single and married in Marlboro County, S. C. Her mother was a relative of the Rivers and Thurmonds of S.C. They had several children - Sally 1886, Jessie M. 1888 and John 1891 who died at age 2. She (our grandmother) died Jan 20,1896 during child birth and before delivery of the baby. She is buried on State Highway 9, about five miles southeast of Bennettsville. In 1928 I took Grandpa to the Cemetery and he pointed out the Grave. At that time there was a wooden marker. I plan to put a marker on the grave.....Our
Grandmother was about 5'7", slender,blue eyes, extremely fair complexion,with long red hair.She had a good voice and loved to sit in her rocker and sing to the children - as well as at church, when she sat in a chair her long red hair would coil up on the floor, so she had two racks to place it on...when she died 3/4 of the family initative went with her."
