Notes: Henry Berry Lowry was the most notoroious of the Lowry family outlaws and several books, plays, and historical records have been written describing his exploits. It began when, in post Civil War days, a neighbor Robert MacKensie (sp) perpetrated charges against the Lowrys(for the purpose of acquiring their land)by accusing the Lowry men of stealing food from his smokehouse and farm implements. He had these items planted on the Lowry property and then got the "home guard" to find them and implicate the Lowrys. According to his negro cook he later repented for his crime and became insane. There was considerable sympathy for the outlaws by the people of the community and on occasion Henry Berry would join the posse in search of himself. At one time an officer gave hm a uniform which he wore in searching for hmself with other troops. The legend also claims that Henry Berry Lowry's mother persuaded him not to kill MacKensie. Henry Berry's rifle was given to the Lowry family by Gen. T. Sherman, of the Union Army, and is now in the possesion of Dr. Kermit Lowry, Jr. As related by D. F. Lowry.(ref.'ToDieGame'W.McK.Evans)
