Father: Dr. Richard Bailey (Bayley)
Mother: Catherine Charlton
Notes: After William's death Elizabeth stayed in Italy living with friends from whom she became interested in the Catholic religion.. When she returned to the United States, attracted to the Catholic Church against her families wishes, she joined the church on March 14, 1805. She established a girls school in Baltimore at the invitation of a priest, largely because she needed the money. Based on this school she founded the Sisters of St. Joseph, and from that time forward she became known as Mother Seton. Even before her husband died, she worked with the poor in New York City, particularly poor widows with small children. She became known as the Protestant Sister of Charity. She is recognized as the founder of the parachoil schools of the Catholic Church. She was canonized in 1975, the first native born North American to be raised to the altars.
Her nephew Archbishop James Rooseovelt Bayley was the see of Baltimore. Source 'Mother Seton by Leonard Feeney'.
